Let Freedom Ring at Shelters Around the Country

When someone says, “Let freedom ring”, there are a few iconic images that come to mind. The sizzling of hot dogs and burgers on a roaring grill while family, friends, and loved ones gather and celebrate. The booming echo of fireworks as they soar skyward and explode into a shower of twinkling technicolor. The flapping fabric on an American flag waving proudly in the wind. These images are an undeniable part of the season, and no phrase captures them better than “let freedom ring”. However, in the worlds of animal shelters, rescues, and humane societies, that phrase holds an entirely different meaning.

Organizations across the country are currently running their yearly “Let Freedom Ring” specials. They are hoping to find forever homes for their furry residents by offering incredible limited time deals on adoptions. Sales and specials will differ from shelter to shelter, but one thing is for certain, there is no better time to open your home to a brand-new furry friend. But why do animal shelters run these events every 4th of July? As it turns out, it’s not just patriotism that spurs on these specials.

Overcrowding in Animal Shelters

While every “Let Freedom Ring” special is different, there is one common factor among most: a focus on cats and kittens. In most parts of the country, July falls right in the middle of “Kitten Season”. According to the ASPCA, “Kitten season, otherwise known as feline breeding season, takes place during warm months (typically March through October, but varies across the country), and many shelters experience the bulk of their cat and kitten intake during this time.” Paired with the fact that a single, unspayed adult cat can have up to two litters of 4+ kittens, this translates totens of thousands of stray kittens in desperate need of love, care, and attention.

The unfortunate truth is that this overcrowding means that many animals cannot and will not receive the care they need. Many of the kittens surrendered to these shelters are so young that they need to be bottle fed. The best way to help to lessen the load on the shelter and find forever homes for the animals inside!

These sales and specials are designed to benefit everyone, from those looking to adopt to the animals in desperate need of care and resources.

While the sales look different everywhere, and you should consult with your own local animal shelter for details, there are several regular deals that groups across the country offer during their “Let Freedom Ring” events, including all adoptions for the patriotic price of $17.76, free adoptions for adult cats and discounted adoptions for kittens, and even all adoptions completely free if the need is great enough. If you have been considering adding another pet to your family, now is the best time. Your adoption will make a truly massive positive impact.

In Conclusion

Animal shelters are always in need, and there are countless ways to lend your support. However, this time of year, there’s no better way to help than to support your shelter’s “Let Freedom Ring” event. Your actions not only change the life of the newest member of your furry family but ensure that dozens of other animals can receive the care they need.
