As part of our Saving 3,000 Pets at Risk in 2025 campaign, Gnocchi’s story is a beautiful reminder of why we do what we do. Rescued from the brink of euthanasia, this sweet Lab-Weimaraner mix captured the hearts of everyone she met—and quickly became a shining example of resilience, kindness, and the second chances every pet deserves.
On the Euthanasia List — Simply for Being There Too Long
Like so many pets in rural Kentucky, Gnocchi’s journey began at an overcrowded shelter in Bell County. With limited space and even fewer resources, the shelter was forced to make heartbreaking decisions daily. Gnocchi, along with four other dogs, found herself on the euthanasia list—not because she was aggressive or sick—but simply because the shelter was full, and she had been there too long.
Adding to the urgency, Gnocchi had an issue with one of her back legs. At first glance, it appeared she had a broken hip—a condition that made her even less likely to be adopted in a system overwhelmed with healthy dogs. But when the team at Fields of Freedom took a closer look, they discovered it wasn’t a break at all. The injury was likely from puppyhood or a birth defect, making her walk a little quirky—but only adding to her charm.
A Gentle Soul with Mama Bear Energy
From the moment she was rescued, Gnocchi (affectionately nicknamed "Noki") showed just how special she was. Calm, passive, and incredibly sweet, she seemed to sense the fragility of those around her. On the very ride that saved her life, she shared the back seat with Tandem, a blind beagle rescued the same day.
While Tandem trembled with fear, Gnocchi leaned in, licking his ears and offering comfort. Her natural "mama bear" energy was undeniable—she wasn’t just saving herself that day, she was making sure Tandem felt safe too.
Gnocchi spent a few months with Fields of Freedom, quickly becoming a favorite. Her playful side blossomed, but her gentle, nurturing nature remained. She loved other dogs, making fast friends wherever she went, and always had a calm, steady presence that made everyone—humans and animals alike—feel at ease.
The Perfect Ending — and a New Beginning
After months of waiting, Gnocchi’s perfect family found her. She boarded the transport bus headed for Connecticut, where her new mom Kate was waiting with open arms. Even better? Kate’s family already had a Lab ready to become Gnocchi’s new best friend.
Now, Gnocchi is living the life she always deserved: a warm home, a built-in bestie, and four children to grow up alongside. Her once uncertain future has transformed into a life full of love, play, and family adventures.
And the best part? Thanks to our connection, we’ll get to see Gnocchi thrive through updates, photos, and videos as she settles into her forever home.
